Freespace 2 is a space combat simulation published by Interplay in 1999 and developed by Volition. It's the sequel to Descent Freespace: The Great War, but in my opinion it supplants and surpasses its predecessor in every possible way.

Concept

Set several years after the events of The Great War, Freespace 2 finds the player fighting separatist humans as well as mysteriously returning Shivans in a series of amazing combat missions.
