Update: The nice PR folks for the game were kind enough to send me a Steam key for the game, so stay tuned for my own look at it! ;)
Recently the folks behind X Rebirth have released a massive 2.0 patch called 2.0 Secret Service Missions which adds a boatload of stuff and apparently strives to improve a bunch of other stuff. Apparently, “X Rebirth 2.0 represents a major update for a wide variety of gameplay mechanics.” To celebrate this release, you can get the game on Steam for 50% off until May 23rd. I’m curious to read about what previous owners of the game think of the new updates, so if you already own the game, chime in and let us know what you think. ;)
Can’t wait for your review. I really wonder if they managed to at least partially remove some of the suck of the original game.
Its a start Brian, it has the potential to be a cracking game, they must have been a bit worried about a couple of decent stonkers coming out soon eh? Say noah more squire, nudge nudge wink wink, know what I mean squire lol
I’ve spent some time with the 2.0 release.
And… it’s not eaxtly great, but definitely better.
– The graphics are a bit better, and it feels way smoother (thought I did finally switch the gfx card, so how much of that is the result of 2.0 fixes, I can’t tell)
– There are new cockpits mods that you can buy and install in the Skunk. They are actually pretty decent!
– There’s a working radar. Together with the new cockpits, it definitely helps with situational awareness.
– The combat is rebalanced and it can actually be a bit hard (as opposed to flying Invincible Skunk of Doom in 1.x)
– You can contact anyone in the station from the comfort of the Skunk’s cockpit. The game also keeps the database of all the people in the entire station – so you can, for example, select a station, select a mechanic and the game will direct you to the correct docking port.
– There are new missions, but I haven’t encountered them yet.
– There’s an autyopilot for the Skunk. Oh, autopillock, how I missed ye!
– There are targeting controls, but they’re so… God… damn… fiddly!
So, definitely not yet approaching the level of X:Terran or X:Albion (especially now that X:A just got a new big mod), but I like the way it is going.
Of course next week is Arena Commander week, so Rebirth might go back on the virtual shelf :)
Good stuff man, thanks!
Hi gorkomatic, with the new X:A mod, do you mean Litcube’s Universe? It’s the only mod I found being mentioned in the Steam forum for X:A.
framerate is still garbage even on minimum settings, game’s still unplayable as far as I’m concerned.
