The folks over at GamersGate are having a huge (17 pages worth!) sale which includes a ton of space games for ridiculously low prices. The list is fairly long, so take a look after the cut:
- Darkstar One for $5.00
- Galactic Dream – Rage of War for $5.99
- Haegemonia – Legion of Iron for $7.50
- O.R.B for $5.99
- Precursors for $8.99
- Space Empires IV for $2.99
- Space Empires V for $5.99
- Space Empire Bundle (Space Empires IV and V) for $8.98
- Star Assault for $4.98
- Star Fury for $2.99
- X: Beyond the Frontier for $3
- X Superbox (The entire X series) for $20
- X-Tension for $3
There’s a lot of pretty good stuff on this list (Space Empires IV and Haegemonia are my best pics), some mediocre stuff (O.R.B., Darkstar One and the X games) and some crap (Star Assault, Star Fury, Space Empires V), but these are good deals if you want to expand your collection regardless. Enjoy!
So can you help a brother out? I'm not much or a strategy gamer, don't have the attention span, so 4X games are out unless you think one of these is such a standout that I should give it a look. I like games where you wander the universe and meet alien cultures and explore worlds, and I guess, engage in combat on occasion. So Starflight and StarCon are my shining examples here. Any advice?
How far in time can I go back?
Hmmm … I guess as far as you have to go to find a great game. I'm not really hung up on the tech, as long as it's got a great universe to explore and cool stuff to find. I'm desperate for something like that, they just don't make those kind of games anymore.
Well, if I can take you back a bit, the games that, in my mind, really captured the feeling of exploration well (besides SF and SC2) are:
Protostar (basically Starflight 3)
Nomad
Millennia: Altered Destinies
Frontier: Elite II
Iron Seed
Runners up include
Future Magic I: Sentinel Worlds
Hard Nova
Star Command
Hope that helps! :)
